Rising Costs Put Pressure on Housing
Rising Construction Costs Threaten Housing in Cyprus, as highlighted in Brussels by Stephanos Pierides, secretary general of the Federation of Associations of Building Contractors (Oseok) and Head of Environmental Issues at the European Construction Industry Federation (Fiec). He stressed that escalating costs are worsening the housing shortage and making homes less affordable.
Meetings with Cypriot MEPs
During his visit, Pierides met with Cypriot MEPs Loukas Fourlas, Michalis Hatzipandelas, and Costas Mavrides. He emphasized how soaring costs are straining the sector and making housing less affordable for families across Cyprus.
Preparing for EU Presidency 2026
Pierides also held discussions with Demetris Petrides, Attaché at the Permanent Representation of Cyprus to the EU. Their talks focused on boosting cooperation in preparation for Cyprus assuming the EU Council Presidency in 2026.
Focus on Environment and Sustainability
As chairman of Fiec’s Subcommittee on Environment, Pierides took part in a meeting with Energy and Housing Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. Conversations covered water adequacy and the role of the construction industry in supporting Europe’s transition toward resilience and sustainability.
Stronger Voice for Cyprus in EU Policy
According to Oseok, its active involvement in Fiec allows Cyprus to have a greater influence in shaping European policies that directly affect the future of the construction sector at both the national and EU level. This influence will be crucial as Rising Construction Costs Threaten Housing in Cyprus, impacting both affordability and long-term planning.
